I joined a group on a certain book. This group often organizes some activities. This is my first time to participate in this activity. I went to Qingqing Bar when I was young. This is the first time in my life that I have been to such a large bar in China. My knowledge of bars is through movies and other people’s descriptions. I was full of expectations before going there, thinking that it would be like a bar abroad, where I could see a group of unknown people jumping around casually, and I could jump along with them, in order to release some of the helplessness in my heart. But I never expected that after going to the bar, I would feel even more depressed!

3. Taiwan opposition leader accepts Xi's invite to visit China
Context: * Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of Taiwan's main opposition party (KMT), has accepted Xi Jinping's invitation to visit China from April 7–12. This trip will be covering Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu. * This will be the first visit to China by a sitting KMT chairperson since 2016. * This is controversial because Cheng has insisted on meeting Xi before visiting the US, drawing criticism for appearing too aligned with Beijing. 1.
Further Context: * This comes as the ruling DPP accuses the KMT of doing China's bidding by blocking a $40 billion special defense budget in Taiwan's opposition-controlled parliament, though the KMT says it simply wants more details and refuses to sign blank cheques to what seems to be a vague military slush fund bill. * In the mean time, China continues to freeze out Lai's government by doing nothing to engage with President Lai Ching-te, labeling him a "separatist," while regularly welcoming KMT officials in cross strait exchanges. * Cheng's trip would place her in China about a month before Trump's expected mid-May Beijing summit, which was postponed from early April due to the US-Israel invasion of Iran. 6. A foreigner’s perspective: a real week’s life record in Shanghai | China vlog
I spent this week completely immersed in local Chinese life. I started by exploring the charming local neighborhoods, wandering the quiet streets surrounding historic sites and tranquil parks. I wandered along the poetic and picturesque alleys, feeling like I was in the city's hidden dreamland, and then headed deeper into the old town to experience the traditional architecture and slow-paced, nostalgic atmosphere. Afterwards, I hit the cafe and found some cozy local spots to relax and recharge. I ended the day by strolling through a bustling neighborhood food market, breathing in the busy yet warm energy of Shanghai’s daily life – this is where the city really comes alive. This is what a real and down-to-earth week for a foreigner living in Shanghai looks like: slow, local and full of small but beautiful moments.
7. Shanghai (& Hangzhou) are consistently ranked top 5 global tech cities — what are the best places to actually see this?
Hi all! Every ranking I come across places Shanghai (and sometimes Hangzhou) in the top 5 most advanced tech cities in the world — robotics, AI, science, tech, innovations, you name it. But I'm struggling to find good recommendations on where to actually experience this as a visitor. What are the best museums, districts, attractions, or spots to witness this futuristic side of the city firsthand? Things that give you that genuine "wow, I'm living in the future" feeling.
8. Student looking for host family
Hello I'm 19F and a med student in France, I wish to travel to Shanghai next summer during a month or so while staying at a host family. I speak beginner mandarin and would love to discover more of mainland china's culture (I lived all my life in hk). Is it possible to find a host family with someone my age willing to accept me? I am a social person so l really wish above all to meet people and make friends. Is there any program for this? Website? Does anyone potentially know host families? (for info : I am not a fan of guest houses with other foreigners because that would not help with me truly immersing myself in the culture and meeting locals...)
9. Is anyone from Chile in Shanghai?
Hi, I’ve been working on a project: learning about a country for a week in Shanghai (exploring their culture, language, and finding some Chilean elements in Shanghai). Next week is Chile Week! 🇨🇱 It would be wonderful if I could meet someone from Chile or anyone who wants to know more about this country. My husband (American) and I (Chinese) would love to invite you to a Chilean restaurant and learn more about this country from you! DM me if you’re interested!🤗

Hello folks, I got accepted for an exchange semester from my German University to Tongji in Shanghai. I will visit the school of management at tongji. Hence, im planning my accommodation for my stay. I have heard that most students stay at singping because of affordable prices; like 200-300€ per/month. However, sharing a room for the whole semester may be inconvienent for me. This is why i am looking forward to get a room in a shared apartment. Does anyone have recommendation? How much can i expect to spend? Is the inconvienence of singping dormitries worth it in regard of of college culture and lifestyle? thanks you in advance Best regards

3. Guidance and info for visitors
Edit (January 2024): Scams were previously on this list, but #8. I feel like I need to put this at top. ❗❗❗**Don't go out with stangers at places around Nanjing Road. ❗❗❗** Once a month there is a thread here titled "Help! I got scammed". And every post is, guy visiting Shanghai, meets a woman on Tinder/TanTan, she picks a place on Nanjing Lu, gets pressured into paying an inflated bill of several thousand RMB. Don't go out with a stranger you met an hour ago on a hookup app and let them pick the place, especially if it's on or around Nanjing Road. In the course of one year this sub has gone from discussions of government lockdown ration boxes to posts from people needing advice on visiting the city. There are older questions from people travelling to Shanghai, but the city has been cut off for about three years, and a lot has changed. I’m putting this thread together to crowdsource answers to common questions we’ve seen more often in the past few weeks so we can help our visitor friends. I’m going to give it a start, but there are things I don’t know, and I’m hoping other members of the community can give feedback and I’ll update things. I'm hoping we can all add stuff and make this a sticky to help people visiting our city. 1. **Airports** a) Pudong. This airport is the more international one. There are not good food options and it is far outside of the city. i. You can take Line 2 metro into the city. This is cheap but slow. ii. There is a maglev train. This is fast but will only get you into part of Pudong. You’ll probably have to switch to the metro or a taxi here. Be cautious of the taxis here. iii. You can take a taxi. There will be people in the airport offering you a ride. Ignore them. Follow the signs to the taxi stand outside and wait in line. Have your destination printed out or on your phone in Chinese. Make sure they flip down the meter to start it within a few minutes. 1. Taxis fares vary by the time of day and traffic. Around 200-300RMB sh

This is my first time in this city, let alone the countryside. I managed to get a 144 hour visa and hope to go to Beijing, Wuhan and other places next time, as well as various attractions in this amazing country. So lucky to see it.
https://youtu.be/aJDbV6hMfjs?si=Yjv5a3cgc1se_kaO
5. Working in China (e.g. Shanghai) as a foreigner — still worth it in 2026?
Hi everyone, I’m considering working in China (mainly Shanghai) and wanted to get a realistic sense of how things are currently. My background is: * experience in IT/data-related work * about 2 years of previous study experience in China * Mandarin at an advanced level (but not native) I’ve heard quite mixed opinions recently, so I wanted to ask: * Is it still worth it to move to China for work nowadays? * How foreigner-friendly is the job market currently? * Are there specific industries or roles where foreigners still have better chances (apart from teaching English)? Also, I’ve come across a few concerns and I’m not sure how accurate they are: * limited long-term benefits (e.g. pension situation for foreigners) * dependency on employer for work visa (giving HR strong leverage) Would be great to hear how this works in practice. And finally: * what platforms/websites would you recommend for finding jobs in China as a foreigner? Would really appreciate honest insights from people with recent experience.
6. Are you allowed to study part time while on a work visa?
recently moved to Shanghai and, though I’m loving the city, my mandarin learning is not going so well. Is there any way I can study part-time at a public university while on a work visa? or is private learning the only way to go?
7. USCPA planning to work in China?
I'm a US citizen currently working in a core department of a major Chinese bank (think BOC/ICBC/CCB) in Manhattan. I'm a USCPA and have about 2-3 years of experience in public accounting audit and banking operations. I’m seriously considering moving to China (ideally Shanghai or Chengdu) for a finance or accounting-related role. Given my background—native Mandarin/English, US CPA, and experience with Chinese banking systems in a US regulatory environment—I’m wondering: 1. How is the job market right now for "returnees" with a US passport? 2. Would Big 4 or MNC banks (JPMC, HSBC, etc.) be more likely to sponsor a work permit for someone at my level (Associate/Senior), or should I look into specific "talent programs"? 3. Has anyone made the jump to China? How is your experience? I'm not primarily driven by salary, but rather looking for a lifestyle change.Any insights on sponsorship likelihood and target firms would be greatly appreciated!
8. Can I become an International/ Private elementary school teacher in Shanghai? (Bilingual school is ok too? - not to sure what it is)
I am considering moving to Shanghai after working and living in Seoul, South Korea for about 10 years. I speak decent conversational mandarin (I am Hong Kong Canadian - born and raised in Canada). I would ideally like to go for international/private elementary school that offers ESL English but open to other positions/subjects for I/P elementary schools. For context, I hold a BA in Arts (Asian studies) from UBC (top 50 universities in the world). \- Currently I have 8.5 years of teaching experience with 6.5\~7 years of Private Elementary School experiences in Seoul, South Korea. \- I am certified with a 120 hours of TEFL. \- I have been IB trained. \- As mentioned before I am dual citizenship (Hong Kong Canadian) so for a bonus I hold both a Hong Kong ID + Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents ID - meaning I don’t need a work visa because I can work in China without a sponsorship. \- Native in English, Fluent in Cantonese, Conversational in Korean and Mandarin. I know I need connections so I’m starting off here to see if anybody would like to connect with me from Shanghai or put me in touch with one in Shanghai. Also what's the likelihood of actually landing a job at a reputable international/private elementary school and what is the application process like? \*EDIT\* I’m not sure what a bilingual school really is (I hope it’s not like an academy in Korea) but if gives me the same benefits as private/international schools like pay and days off then I’m open to that too!

10. Ski instructor from Switzerland
I’m a private ski teacher from Switzerland I had many Chinese students before. I was in Shanghai the past 7month and I’m looking for the season 2026 to become a ski teacher. What’s the best way to approach that? I don’t have a z visa.
